Just North of M16, this weak nebulosity in Serpens is catalogued as Sharpless-54 and includes a sparse open cluster, NGC 6604 (just left of center). The photo is taken in H-alpha (astrodon 5nm), with 9hours and 50 minutes of total exposure in subframes of 10 minutes (unguided). According to previous photos of the area, there is only H-a emission signal, so it does not make much sense to use other narrow band filters. North is to the right.

This is a relatively unknown area, probably because of the vicinity of the much more famous M16 (The Eagle nebula with the "Pillars of Creation") and M17 (The Swan nebula). Lots of "birds" in this area, maybe I should think of a bird name for this Sh2-54. As a reference of where this nebula is, I attach here an annotated mosaic of two frames (see the entry of August about the Magic of the Milky Way, in this blog) that I took this past summer. The whole area of Sh2-54, M16 and M17 is the same large H-alpha complex where different star clusters have been born and probably many more will be.

This is not a spectacular object, but it gives me that soft and personal pleasure of the not-so-beaten path.
