A (not so) nice nebula, Sh2-170

(En ESPAÑOL abajo)

I started this photo one year ago, with the H-alpha frames, and I have just finished it now in January. It has taken a lot of effort for many reasons: of course the bad weather, or not so bad weather but poor seeing, sometimes collecting only two or three frames per night, and therefore having to use many different nights… Then, on the other hand, processing of this thing is difficult: it is not one of those spectacular nebulae with lots of shapes and contrasts. I would even say, in a kind and respectful way, that this is an ugly nebula, if such a thing can exist in the sky. But in a moment of human weakness I could say that I dislike it. Another reason may be that I did not manage to obtain good color combinations from the narrow band filters, they just don't fit in easily. Maybe because there is little S-II signal, and very little O-III signal, only in the center. This object can be seen in the bigger picture in this very nice photo of my colleague Daniel Trueba:

It is the intense red circle down-left. This nebula, essentially a hydrogen emission nebula, is in Cassopea, and is sometimes called the Little Rosetta. In the center there is a young stellar cluster, Stock 18. Sh2-170 is faint and not found often in the www. Some more details:

Finally I obtained:

H-alpha: 59 frames, 10 minutes each
OIII 61 frames
SII 55 frames

Total 29 hours and 10 minutes
Telescope: Astro-Phyics 130GT
Camera QSI 683

See the SHO color combination that I like the most, and the H-alpha:

Bueno, al final he sacado:

H-alfa 59 tomas de 10 minutos
OIII 61 tomas
SII 55 tomas

Total 29 horas y 10 minutos (175 tomas)
Astro-Phyics 130GT
